Description
Why we created this game
One of the most impactful things we can do when it comes to eating for the climate is reducing food waste. It’s the 2nd most important action in our compass. But it can also be challenging; that’s why we created this game to help you! It’s a sort of “Ready, Steady, Cook” or “Master Chef Mystery Box”. You can play with friends, but some people also use it for themselves as inspiration or a tool.
What you get
The game:
- helps you become a better leftover cook with practical inspiration cards
- transforms your attitude about food waste
- brings you (and your friends together) to have fun in the kitchen
- opens up the conversation to share tips & tricks on how you can use ingredients
- and let’s not forget…actually reduces food waste while you play!
The game includes:
- rulebook about how you play the game
- 100 score cards (enough to play 25+ times)
- 12 inspiration cards to help you create a delicious meal
- access to our League of Leftover Legends to upload your photos and see others’
So, how do you become a Leftover Legend?
There are many ways to become a Leftover Legend: this game is most fun with 3 or more players from different households, but you can also play it alone or with 1-2 players from the same household.
As a host, you are only facilitating the kitchen, there’s no need to be the best cook of the bunch and remember that you don’t carry the full responsibility for the outcome. But it’s natural to feel a bit nervous about it. If you simply share our invitation video (coming soon!) with your friends, they’ll come with the right mindset, so don’t worry. But if it makes you feel better, simply throw 2 pizzas in the freezer as a back-up ;).
How to ‘play’ alone
It’s all about creating a recipe idea from your leftover ingredients. You could, for example, take the inspiration cards and stick them to the inside of your cupboards! That way you can always use them, not only when you’ve decided to play Leftover Legends. You can already dedicate some space for leftover ingredients in your fridge with the eat-this-first tape. Even without real ‘leftover’ ingredients, the blue inspiration cards can help you cook different meal types without a recipe. This can also be helpful if you are a subscriber to a vegetable box or get surprise ingredients from for example Too good to go.
This way the game becomes an inspiration/tool for your cooking. Of course you can also apply the game rules and calculate your points to see how you score, but don’t let this get in the way of using the game’s principles in day-to-day cooking.
How to play the simple version
You care more about connecting with your friend(s) and wouldn’t describe yourself as someone who likes games: play the simplified version. Invite your friends to bring leftover ingredients, create recipe ideas with the inspiration cards of the game, and cook a tasty meal together! Don’t bother about the point system and the pitching.
How to play the full game
This is for people who like games! If you want to familiarize yourself with the game to make you feel more comfortable, play it alone for the first time before inviting others to join in.
Wondering who you’ll invite….What about your friend who you consider a great cook? Or any international friend(s) who are used to a whole different cuisine? Do you have friends you share a passion for living sustainable with?
Step 1: invite your friends to bring leftover ingredients.
We have clear instructions for the types of leftovers everyone should bring, so you have all the ingredients you need for a delicious meal.
An ingredient can be an open item from your fridge like hummus or something that’s over date but still smells okay. The 5 specifically named types of ingredients make preparation super simple!
The host provides some basic staples like pasta, rice and spices. But most likely you won’t have to buy anything extra.
Step 2: create a recipe using a combination of the leftover ingredients.
To help you with this, we’ve researched the principles of what makes a good meal. And with that we created 12 beautiful inspiration cards to help you come up with ideas, like:
- Flavour bingo: how to combine flavours well
- Texture bingo: which textures make your meal even better
- which types of meals you can make
- when to add which ingredients during cooking
- how to optimize the flavour while cooking
- which surprising parts of vegetables you can also eat
… and much more!
Step 3: Let’s score your recipe.
You get points for various aspects, like using 10+ ingredients or using ingredients past the expiration date.
To create a game that’s actually fun to play we collaborated with Lindy and Giel from EVRgreen Studio.
Step 4: it’s time to pitch.
Hand out awards and vote for the recipe that you’re going to cook.
And now of course, it’s time get into the kitchen, cook and enjoy a creative and delicious meal.
You’ve done it, you’re a leftover legend!
Now last but not least: take a picture of your meal and upload it to the League of Leftover Legends.
How to play in an educational setting
For the Dutch game you can order the extra ‘Tips voor docenten’-leaflet with the game. This leaflet gives you tips for how you can play the game with students in secondary education (VO), vocational (MBO) or higher professional education (HBO). The tips are created in cooperation with education professionals from AERES.
