Tips for kids

Written by our Bootcamp instructor Natalia: a happy mum of a pretty picky kindergarden-er and spent a few last years applying both her behavioural science skills as well as her mum-researcher drive to find solutions

Green Lemon Spaghetti

  • Serve peas and pasta separately, if they are not into sauces yet. You can all add them to the pasta and sauce at the table (or separate a portion of peas for them). But do serve a bit of sauce in a little bowl for them, so that they have an option to try it.
  • Let them sprinkle parmesan on what they decide to put on the plate.
  • If you know they are still learning to like pesto and/ or lemon zest, but do eat vegetables in this recipe, you can add them at the very least to the sauce, once the vegetable is cooked and you take out a portion of the vegetable for the kid.

White Wine Mushroom Tagliatelle

  • You can replace wine with white wine vinegar (use ½ vinegar and ½ water for similar flavour results) or even with apple juice, with a bit of vinegar for less sweetness.
  • Serve pasta and the sauce separately to give the kid an option on how to eat the dish.  But do serve a bit of sauce in a little bowl for them, so that they have an option to try it.
  • If you know the kid likes mushrooms but is learning to like the sauces, take out a small portion of mushrooms once you sautéed them and set them aside.
  • Serve walnuts separately from the rest of the sauce, and let everyone sprinkle them on top of their meal at the table.

Fennel and Orange Couscous

  • If you know your kid is still learning to eat feta but will eat other things (zucchini, fennel, hazelnuts), leave some of these without feta when you put it in the oven.
  • Do not mix the ingredients before serving – serve each ingredient in a separate bowl and let the kiddo do the mixing at the table.

Sweet Potato Roast

  • You can leave some sweet potato and cauliflower without paprika if you know that this may deter the kid from eating these vegetables.
  • If you know the kid likes mushrooms but is learning to like the sauces, take out a small portion of mushrooms once you sautéed them and set them aside.
  • Serve walnuts separately to the rest of the sauce, let everyone sprinkle them on top of their meal at the table.
  • Let everyone serve themselves the various parts of the meal at the table.
