Tips for kids
Written by our Bootcamp instructor Natalia: a happy mum of a pretty picky kindergarden-er and spent a few last years applying both her behavioural science skills as well as her mum-researcher drive to find solutions
Orangen-Chili Spaghetti
- Serve pasta and the sauce separately to give the kid an option how to eat the dish. But do serve a bit of sauce in a little bowl for them, so that they have an option to try it.
- If the kid is still learning to like feta, leave out a portion of the cauliflower and tomatoes without it,
- Add a cooked egg for the kid if you know they won’t eat other things.
Balsamico Ravioli
- Choose the ravioli that your kid is most likely to eat, of course.
- Serve pasta and the sauce separately to give the kid an option how to eat the dish. But do serve a bit of sauce in a little bowl for them, so that they have an option to try it.
- If they like mushrooms but nothing else or like them separately, sauté a portion just for them, for 5 minutes rather than 3, then set aside and follow the rest of the recipe.
- If they like peas without sauce, you can defrost some peas for them in the microwave (put it in a bowl with boiling hot water and set for 2 minutes), and serve it with pasta. You can add some butter or olive oil for more flavour and nutrition.
One-pot Lentil Rice
- You can cook some rice for them separately, with no add-ons, if you know they may have hard time eating the mixed dish. You can easily and quickly cook rice in the microwave following the guidelines in this recipe. Just adjust the quantities. And if you make more, you can freeze it for the Nasi Goreng or for another day, when the recipe will call for mixed rice and they need their simple rice with butter. https://www.theguardian.com/food/2024/jan/15/kimchi-fried-rice-peas-prawns-pak-choi-quick-easy-recipe-rukmini-iyer
- Separate a portion of cashew nuts and sauté them for 5 minutes on a dry pan (make sure they do not burn), then let kid sprinkle them on their dish at the table.
- If you know that the kid will eat everything except for fennel, you can swap it with some cauliflower – but add it only with the lentils.
Thai-Erdnuss-Curry
- Let everyone squeeze lime of their dish if you know that kid might be sensitive to this flavour.
- If they like peas without sauce, you can defrost some peas for them in the microwave (put it in a bowl with boiling hot water and set for 2 minutes), and serve it with pasta. You can add some butter or olive oil for more flavour and nutrition.
- If you know they will eat a carrot with onion and ginger on its own, sauté a portion of the carrot for them (a bit longer, abt 8 min) then set aside and do the rest of the dish as instructed. Serve the carrot and rice on its own – but do add a small amount of the sauce on the side, in case they want to try it.
- If they are happy to eat broccoli on its own, you can cook some broccoli separately on the side for them.
Auberginen Wraps mit Minze
- Serve every part of the recipe: aubergines, hummus, sauce and the wraps separately and let everyone build their own wrap.
- Serve some corn on its own, if that’s something that the kid is happy to eat. You can add some butter or olive oil for more nutrition.
- You can add Greek yoghurt if the kid is still learning to like hummus.
Afrikanische Erdnusssuppe
- Omit any spices that you know the kid will not yet eat.
- Set aside pureed soup without spinach and lime if you know they won’t eat anything with green stuff in it.
- Let everyone add lime to their soup at the table.
